Turriff United were knocked out of the first round of the Scottish Cup by Banks O'Dee on Saturday.

United travelled to Spain Park in Aberdeen to take on the Superleague junior side who have been on a strong run of form.

By the final whistle just one goal separated the sides with Lachie Macleod scoring the winning goal for Banks O'Dee.

It was the home side who had the early pressure and an early chance fell to Jack Henderson but his overhead kick did not find the target.

Henderson was then thwarted by the Turriff defence when he was through on goal and the ball was cleared away from danger.

The striker was proving to be the biggest threat for United early on and a ball into the box was close to him, however Turriff keeper David Dey was quicker and managed to smother it.

Dey was then there again to thwart another Banks O'Dee effort when a ball was sent in towards Robert Armstrong.

Turriff's Matthew McDonald had a good run to the home side's box but he could not get a pass to one of his teammates.

The ball found The Dee's Michael Philipson in a good area and his shot towards goal was just wide.

United had a free-kick and it fell to captain James Chalmers but his weak shot did not threaten.

Banks O'Dee keeper Fraser Hobday then managed to collect the ball from a Luke Kinsella corner.

Henderson had a strong shot at goal which went over the United crossbar.

Turriff's McDonald had another good run into The Dee box, this time from the right, however Hobday was there to stop the threat.

As half-time approached, the home side had a free-kick which Armstrong could not find the target with and meant it was 0-0 going into the break.

Banks O'Dee had the early pressure again at the start of the second half.

Dey managed to save an Armstrong shot and Kane Winton was wasteful with an opportunity from a free-kick.

The home side were pushing for the opening goal and Philipson saw his effort hit the side netting, while Mark Gilmour's chance from a free-kick was too weak.

Turriff's Dylan Stuart had a good run into the box from the left but his cross did not find its way into the box and the ball went out.

Banks O'Dee then got their goal on 74 minutes when Macleod made no mistake with his shot.

United started to push for an equaliser with Keir Smith seeing his shot go too high and over the goal.

Liam Norris was next to have a go for the visitors, however his effort was just wide.

Macleod and Jamie Buglass had opportunities in quick succession for the home side but neither were able to find the net.

Turriff had a free-kick in the closing seconds of the game but it came to nothing and the victory went to Banks O'Dee. They will welcome Nairn to Spain Park in the second round.

United manager Dean Donaldson said: "It was a really tough shift for the boys but I thought they were outstanding.

"We just never got the chance that we craved. We were sitting in, soaking up the pressure and trying to get them on the counter-attack but the opportunity just never came.

"I'm proud of every one of them and I can see we are going in the right way.

"There's definitely progress, the fitness levels are getting better and the team as a whole is getting there. We are seeing improvements every week.

"We have Keith next in the league and if they play like that we will be all right. We are just trying to get that consistency with them."
