Elgin City chairman Alan Murray is thrilled by Borough Briggs club’s Scottish Cup draw against Aberdeen
Elgin City chairman Alan Murray can’t wait to put preparations in place for the visit of Aberdeen to Borough Briggs in January.
Murray says his club has been inundated with ticket and hospitality enquiries since they were handed a Scottish Cup fourth round tie at home to the Dons on Monday night.
The date of the tie will be determined by which five matches are picked up for live broadcasting by BBC Scotland and Premier Sports, but the Elgin match is almost certain to be one of them.
There’s likely to be a 4,520 crowd limit imposed on the Black and Whites’ home ground for the big match, Murray revealed.
“To get this game at Borough Briggs is huge. We’re getting a third round at home which is great for us but this is massive,” he said.
“It’s the first time we’ve played Aberdeen competitively at Borough Briggs. There’s been two back in the day at Pittodrie.
“It’s a great reward for everybody at the club. For the management team in particular, they’re getting something back for what they have been doing since they came here.
“Maybe from a commercial point of view, an away fixture against Aberdeen might have been better but from a footballing point of view, you never know, we could be a banana skin for the Dons.”
Once the date of the tie is determined, Elgin will go to work on getting everything right for their biggest money-spinner of the season.
Murray added: “There’s lots of logistics involved. Now that we’ve got our bronze licence, we have a noted capacity of 4520 which we need to check off.
“Everything gets ramped up for a game of this size but it’s already in the planning for an ops meeting.
“It could be a week before we know when the game is played but we’ve been inundated with enquiries for all manner of tickets, hospitality and sponsorship opportunities. We are working on a plan of action for all of this.
“It’s really important that we try to look after our loyal supporters who are there every week. We will try and find the best solution to protect them, first and foremost.”
Murray is thrilled with the lucrative draw and how his club is faring so far this season.
“It’s so positive to be where we are in the league table at the moment and to be through to the fourth round of the cup with a big draw. Long may that continue.”
