Covid-19 brought the sport to a halt last year, stopping the 2019-20 season and ensuring that the following campaign was a write-off.

However, it makes a comeback on Saturday with the running of the Strathbogie Super Tens event, a pre-season tournament with the Strathbogie Cup at stake for the winners.

Aberdeenshire, Banff, Garioch, Moray, Aberdeen Wanderers, Turriff and Mackies join the home Huntly club in entering what will be the biggest men’s competition since the cup made a return three years ago.

Two pools of four teams will play a group stage with a final for the top two and a third-place playoff for the teams coming second in the table. The competition will kick off at noon with 20-minute games involving five forwards and five backs with rolling substitutions.

As well as the main competition there is also the opportunity for women to come and try rugby for the first time.

Tag and touch rugby, and fun adapted games are on offer for females aged 16 and over.

Anyone inspired by the skills and athleticism of the women’s rugby sevens in the Olympics should come down and have a go, with the session starting at 2pm and running for an hour.

Those keen to take part should bring trainers and a drink with them.
