MORAY’S European triathlon stars and Commonwealth Games hopefuls are seeking sponsorship to help them achieve their sporting dream.

All kitted out in Kitzbuhel for the Euro Championships are Sophia Green and Cameron Main.

Sophia Green and Cameron Main head to the European under-23 championships in Kitzbuhel, Austria this week on the crest of a wave.

Green (21) won her Europe Triathlon Cup race in Coimbra, Portugal last weekend, on the back of finishing second and third in her European qualifying events in Wales and Ukraine.

Fellow former Elgin Academy pupil Main, also 21, was also second in his under-23 category in Llanelli and stepped on to his first Europe Triathlon Cup podium in Dnipro to continue his excellent year.

The pair take on their fourth European event of the year in Austria, battling to secure enough ranking points and high-level performances to qualify for Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next summer.

But with around 10 events left to compete in, and associated costs of between £750 and £1000 per race, the Stirling University students know the road ahead is an expensive one.

“Sophia and I have gruelling training schedules, and as full-time university students, we aren’t left with much time to work,” said Main.

“We are fully committed to our sport and would be grateful for any financial support a sponsor could offer. Maybe someone would like to sponsor us for an individual race.”

Cameron and Sophia plan to compete in many more races across Europe, Asia and Canada throughout 2021.

The Elgin athletes are members of Triathlon Scotland’s High Performance squad, based in Stirling. An average training week includes a minimum of eight hours of swimming, 12 hours of cycling, five hours of running and two hours of gym work.

Main recently graduated with an Honours degree in sports and exercise science and will continue full-time study in September with a master’s degree in sports management.

He is also the Chairman of Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation, the charity created by his sister Abbie before she passed away on Christmas Day 2017 due to Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

So far, the charity has raised over £374,000 and helped more than 570 children who are, or have been, affected by cancer.

The Foundation gives children 'Sparkles', which can be a gift or a stay at Abbie’s Sparkle Lodge at Dalraddy Holiday Park situated in the Cairngorms National Park.

Green is in her third year studying sports studies. They both remain honorary members of Moray Firth Triathlon Club and compete for Moray Road Runners.

The pair will race again on Friday 18th June in the Under 23 European Triathlon Championships in Kitzbühel, Austria. Friday’s race format will be three semi-finals, with the top nine from each race, plus the next three fastest athletes across the three semi-finals, will compete in the final on Saturday 19th June.

Green will compete in the Woman's U23/Elite semi-final 2 at 12.45 pm on Friday 18th June and Main in the Men's U23/Elite semi-final 3 at 3.50 pm.

On Saturday 19th June, the B Finals will commence from 12.40 pm, with the A Finals starting at 3.30 pm.
