THE Garioch Sports Centre welcomed representatives from five of Run Garioch’s six partner charities to Inverurie earlier this week as they launched their own campaigns to encourage runners to raise funds for them.

The six charities – The Archie Foundation, CLAN, Charlie House, Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, Inspire PTL and Friends of the Neonatal Unit – all provide much-needed assistance on race day.

Their duties include marshalling all six race routes, managing the runners’ bag drop and distributing water at the event’s four water stations.

In return for their assistance, the six charities receive guaranteed entries to all of the Run Garioch races, which can be accessed by runners even after general entries close on Sunday, March 1, or in the event of a particular race selling out.

Christine Appel, race support manager, said: “We’re hugely grateful to our charity partners for all the work they do for us on race day, as well as in the wider community.”

“If you’re not sure whether to take on the challenge of Run Garioch, signing up to fundraise can be just the push you need.

“Each of the charities can provide full support with your training and help you to fundraise effectively.”

“And even if you’ve already booked your race place, you can still get in touch with our charities to access their support and raise funds for them.”

Oliver Middleton from Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland said: “We’re hugely excited and grateful to be one of several wonderful charities benefiting from Run Garioch again this year. As a local lad I know how important and loved the event is in the community and attending this week’s charity launch only cemented my excitement for race day.”

“We’re always looking for individuals to get involved and fundraise for us. If you feel like competing, Chest Heart ad Stroke Scotland will be there to help make your experience, simple, effective and most importantly fun!

“With your help we can ensure that those affected by a Chest Heart or Stroke condition get back on their feet and live their life to the absolute full.”

Chloe Jackson, fundraising co-ordinator for The Archie Foundation added: “We’re thrilled to be chosen as one of the affiliated charities for Run Garioch 2020.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to raise awareness of the incredible impact Archie has on children and their families across the north of Scotland.”

“We invite all our supporters to sign up to Run Garioch, put on the Yellow Archie Running Top and help Archie in making the difference.”

Last year’s Run Garioch half-marathon winner in a time of just 1hr 12mins was Commonwealth Games medallist, Banchory-based Robbie Simpson.

And the town had a local hero to savour with Richard Strachan finally breaking the tape in the 10k, finishing in only 34mins 33secs.

Jenny Bannerman won the 5k in a women’s course record time of 17mins 1sec, beating the previous best by two seconds.
