It was mixed results for Garioch bowlers Jason and Carla Banks in their latest matches at the 'Just' World Indoor Bowls Championships.

With no overseas players due to Covid-19 and travel restrictions, they were invited to compete in the contest, which is being held at Potters Resort, Great Yarmouth.

Carla played in the quarter-finals of the mixed pairs on Friday with partner Robert Paxton, who was last year’s world singles champion.

They took on and beat Marion Purcell and Mervyn King 7-6, 9-5.

After a back and forth exchange, Banks and Paxton won the opening set. With the scoreline tied at 6-6 in the last end Paxton sprung the jack in a tightly packed head with his first bowl and they went on the take the set 7-6.

In the second set, Purcell and King opened up a 5-1, five end lead but they failed to score again as Banks and Paxton hit a purple patch, scoring a 2, 3, 2 and 1 to move through to Sunday’s semi-finals.

Carla is next in action on Saturday when she takes on Laura Daniels in the ladies singles at 7.30pm.

Jason took on Hawick’s Julie Forrest in the open singles championship on Thursday after Ian Honnor had to withdraw from the competition.

Forrest has won the Ladies World Matchplay Singles title for the past two years, while Banks is the reigning World Under 25 champion.

Forrest only scored on two ends on the first set. The players were tied at 3-3 after four ends, but Banks checked out with back-to-back trebles and doubles to seal the set with an end to spare.

Forrest though rallied in the second set chalking up singles on the first four ends and then Banks stormed back with a 2, 1 and 4 to hold a 7-4 advantage with just two ends remaining.

Once again though Forrest dug deep, scored a treble and single to edge the set 8-7 and force a tie-break.

She took the upper hand in the second end, Banks drew the shot with his last delivery, but a runner from Forrest removed the shot bowl to leave her with a match lie and a place in the second round on Thursday, January 21.

Earlier on in the competition Banks took part in the open pairs competition with Turriff's Connor Milne but they were beaten 8-5, 9-4 by Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney from England.
