Garioch bowler Carla Banks and partner Rob Paxton were beaten in the final of the mixed pairs at the 'Just' 2021 World Indoor Bowls Championships.

They took on Scottish pair Julie Forrest and Stewart Anderson at the Potters Resort, near Great Yarmouth.

Banks, who was debuting at the championships, partnered with English veteran Paxton.

Forrest and Anderson won the first set 8-3 and triumphed 6-5 in the close second set to seal the victory.

The Scottish duo counted singles on the last two ends of the first set to win 8-3 in the best of two sets, nine ends final.

It was an evenly balanced second set with Paxton and Banks fighting back and going 3-1 ahead after four ends but a treble for the Scots gave them a 4-3 lead.

From there until the end of the match, each pair scored singles on two ends – tying the score at 4-4 and then 5-5 playing the last end.

The shot from Paxton and Banks would have taken the match to a title deciding shoot-out and if Anderson and Forrest scored they would win the title.

With a jack length advantage, Banks pulled the mat up the rink and threw the jack to the ‘T’ and proceeded to draw just inches from the jack and she added another shot with her second bowl.

Anderson asked Forrest to run the jack to the ditch and she did just that and her bowl followed in and lay about a yard away.

Paxton though responded with a superb draw to the lip of the rink, but Anderson ran the bowl off the green, and when Paxton fell agonisingly short with his last bowl, the title went to the Scots.
