North junior football: Late goal surge takes Lossiemouth United to victory over Stoneywood Parkvale while Burghead Thistle exit Grill League Cup at Rothie Rovers
Lossiemouth United were the big winners for Moray in the north junior football scene on Saturday.
Aberdeen outfit Stoneywood Parkvale were the visitors to Phoenix Park for a Championship match and took an early lead.
It stayed that way until the stroke of half time when Ben Cullen - who missed a penalty in the match - took a Harvey Henderson pass and fired home the equaliser for United.
The scores remained level going into the last ten minutes, when ex-Deveronvale defender Jamie Tinnock picked the perfect time to score his first Lossie goal with a back post volley.
That spurred the home side on and further strikes by James Johnston and Matt Cuffley in the closing two minutes sealed a 4-1 United success.
Forres Thistle were held to a 1-1 draw by a visiting Glentanar.
The Aberdeen side went in front after nine minutes but Josh Stephenson, who was denied by a save on 25 minutes, finished off good work by Connor Aubrey a minute later.
Forres keeper Adam Crichton also made a good stop in the first half and the home side were awarded an indirect free kick inside the Glentanar box but Cammy Grant’s strike was saved.
In a late flurry, Aubrey saw a shot tipped over and Neil Owen had a drive cleared off the line. Sam Janousek missed a late one-on-one for Thistle as it finished 1-1.
New Elgin lost 2-0 at home to Longside and Dufftown were beaten 6-1 at Nairn St Ninian.
in the Grill League Cup quarter-finals, Burghead Thistle went down 4-0 at Rothie Rovers.
Islavale’s match at Hermes was abandoned after 50 minutes due to a head injury sustained by Vale’s Finlay Stables.
Owen Christie made it 16 goals for the season already with a double in Deveronside’s 3-3 draw at Banchory St Ternan
