A clear and relatively warm summer's evening heralded the opening games of the Aberdeenshire Cup with the first of two Old Farm derby's to be held this week seeing Inverurie Loco's head to the Haughs to take on Turriff United.

Having lost out to Buckie Thistle at home on Saturday, the Turriff side were out to take on the Railwaymen and provide the home fans with a first win on home turf.

Early out of traps Turriff were on the attack with Owen Kinsella the first to take a shot on goal but which ended up straight into the arms of Andy Reid.

Loco's were quick to retaliate with Neil Gauld's first attempt sent out by Turriff's keeper Tim Findlay.

Strong pressure from Turriff saw them force their first corner on the 12 minutes but they failed to capitalise on it.

Kyle Gordon was next up for United to take a shot on Reid's goals, but failed to get any power behind it for an easy save.

Conversely , Keiran Adams for Loco's connected solidly several minutes later from the edge of the box only to see it sail over Findlay's goals.

Reid was again faced with a less powerful shot on goal this time from Murray Cormack and saved it easily.

With 25 minutes gone end to end play continued with push and counter push seeing both sides testing each other, including a solid effort from Callan Gray for United stopped short by Reid.

Several Loco's corners followed in quick succession and free kick from Calum Dingwall was bounced off the Turriff wall and out of play.

With five minutes of the first half left, Rory Brown sent one flying towards the Loco's goal only to see it sail over the crossbar.

Further moves from both sides proved inconclusive as the first half ended goalless.

A Turriff free kick failed to get things moving as the second half got underway and it would be Kyle Gordon who would be the first to offer an opportunity for the home side with a cracking pass across the face of the Loco's goal, but there was no team-mate there to connect with it.

What proceeded was a foreshadowing of what was to come with Loco's taking five successive corners, none of which were converted.

It would take to the 64th minute for the deadlock to be broken when a free kick for Loco's around 25-yards out was sent flying into Findlay's net by Calum Dingwall.

It took less than five minutes for Andy Watt to add his name to score sheet with a clean finish to take the visitors 2-0 up.

He was followed shortly after by Rob Ward who added a third with a low shot into the corner of the net, but Turriff were quick on the rebound with a debut goal for Murray Cormack taking it to 3-1.

The fourth and final goal from Loco's in a congested Turriff box was called for Gauld, but eventually credited to Adams.

Despite further attacks on the Loco's goal, United were unable to pull any further consolation goals.

This is the second time Turriff have seen the opposition send four past them, but the scoreline was not truely indicative of the solid play from United which saw them hold off Loco's well into the second half while also making some serious attempts on the oppositions goal and only finally slipping to a well taken free-kick.

The ball also spent considerably more time on the pitch than in the air compared to Saturday's game, a move reflected in the amount of possession for Turriff, but whose young players remain eerily silent when playing compared to the vocals of their opponents.

In the other games - Buckie Thistle lost out 1-2 to Formartine who now progress to take on Huntly.

Dyce Juniors and Hermes saw their match end in penalties after a 2-2 draw, with Dyce winning the shoot-out and now facing Deveronvale.

Keith ended up with a match they would soon rather forget against Banks O'Dee who opened the scoring with just one minute on the clock to lead 5-0 at half-time in a game which they eventually won 6-1 and which now sees them now face off against Locos.
