Most people were predicting a Buckie Thistle versus Brechin City final, but Banks O' Dee and Inverurie Locos upset the script on Saturday.

Buckie were expected to reach their third consecutive GPH Builders Merchants League Cup final at home to Dee but lost out in a penalty shoot-out.

After having Joe McCabe shown a straight red card for a tackle midway through the first half, ten-man Jags took the lead before half time when Andy MacAskill's corner curled straight in.

Chris Antoniazzi levelled for the visitors on 53 minutes and it remained 1-1 at the end of the 90 minutes, with referee Gordon Seago having to phone the Highland League to see if the tie went into extra time or penalties.

It went straight to the shoot-out and with Sam Pugh seeing his kick saved and MacAskill hitting the bar, Buckie were up against it.

Jack Henderson also struck the bar for Dee but Kyle MacLeod's kick to keep Jags in it was trundled weakly at keeper Andy Shearer, and the visitors won 3-2 in the shootout.

Goals by Sam Robertson and Sam Burnett gave Locos a surprise success over title-contenders Brechin at Harlaw Park, setting up a final against Dee at Fraserburgh's Bellslea Park.

Five matches were played in the Breedon Highland League with Rothes closing the gap on sixth-placed Locos to just a point with a 2-0 success at home to Nairn County, Greg Morrison getting both goals.

A Gregor MacDonald hat-trick helped Brora Rangers regain third spot with a 4-0 win at Turriff United, Ali Sutherland also scoring.

Top scorers of the day were champions Fraserburgh who hit six without reply at Wick Academy.

Jamie Beagrie netted on two minutes but it wasn't until the second half that Broch showed their superiority with further strikes by Scott Barbour (2), Sean Butcher, Marc Lawrence and Logan Watt.

Keith made it nine games without a win as they slipped to their fourth consecutive loss at Clach.

A first Maroons goal for Gavin Elphinstone ended a Keith run of more than eight hours without a goal to equalise Lewis Mackenzie's opener, but ex-ICT veteran Gary Warren got the Inverness side's first half winner.

And Callum Murray, who made a mid-season switch from Forres Mechanics to Huntly, scored the winner for his current employers against his former ones in a 2-1 Huntly victory at Christie Park.

Andy Hunter put the homesters ahead early on with Ross County loan teenager Connall Ewan equalising after half an hour, but Murray got the winner before the hour.
