Charlesworth (29) said he was sold on Huntly manager Allan Hale's plans for the club.

But the Inverurie-based player will have to wait for his chance to pull on a black and gold shirt as he undergoes surgery on his cruciate ligament next month.

"I’ve been seeing a Professor Mackay in Glasgow, he did the operation for Mark Reynolds at Aberdeen and he was talking about the new way of doing this operation," said Chalesworth.

"Hopefully it speeds up the rehab if it’s all done properly, so rather than being 9-12 months it’s more of a 7-9 months recovery time.

"Huntly knew from the outset what was going on and they were nothing but supportive. It was more about showing a real desire to get me in and making me feel wanted, and that appealed to me big time."

Charlesworth is signing for a club where his older brother Martin played recently, and his dad Charlie was manager for a spell.

He came through the youth ranks at Elgin City before signing for Lossiemouth, where his father was boss at the time.

Deveronvale was his next port of call and after a successful spell, he drew the attention of Inverurie Locos and made a move there, before returning to Vale two years ago.

He was top scorer for the Banff club in the 2019-20 season that was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A knee injury while preparing for Vale's return to action last year has kept him out ever since, but he is relishing the opportunity to shine at Huntly.

"The club has given me the year if I need it, but if I get back sooner then perfect," he said.

"They are all for not rushing me and making sure they can help get the best out of me when I'm ready.

"I will give myself every chance possible to get back in the best shape I can and repay the club for the faith they have shown in me."
