Formartine United now know the date of their Highland league Cup semi-final after plans to finish the competition were announced.

The latter stages of the contest, which is sponsored by Utilita, were held over when the league decided to terminate the 2019-20 season in March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

At a meeting of the league's management committee it was decided that the competition would be completed this month.

It means that United's match against Rothes will go ahead on Saturday, October 17, at North Lodge Park. It will be played behind closed doors with live streaming via a subscription channel.

A spokesman for the Highland League said: "The same arrangement will hold for the final, which will be held on Saturday, October 24, at a venue to be announced.

"More details regarding matches and live stream access will be announced as soon as they are finalised."

The other semi-final will see Brora Rangers host Buckie Thistle at Dudgeon Park on Sunday, October 18, which will also be played behind closed doors and streamed online.

It comes after the start of the Highland League season was postponed.

It was due to the start on Saturday, October 17 but the league took the decision to pause it in view of the current public health circumstances.

The season will now not start before Saturday, November 28 and confirmation of that or an extension of the pause will be considered at a meeting during the week beginning Monday, November 9.

The league spokesman said about concluding the cup fixtures: "In making this decision, the league management committee took the view that, while the start of season 2020-2021 had been paused, there remained an opportunity to complete season 2019-20 in a concise form and within current match guidelines."

Meanwhile, United continued their pre-season preparations with a friendly game against Arbroath at Gayfield Park last Friday evening.

The SPFL Championship team defeated their Highland League visitors 4-0.

Other friendly results over the past weeks have seen United beat junior side Culter 5-1 at Crombie Park, Peterculter. Scott Lisle scored two and Jonathan Crawford, Jonathan Smith and Daniel Park also got on the scoresheet for Formartine.

United beat fellow junior team Hermes 2-0 at North Lodge Park, with Aaron Norris and Conor Gethins scoring for the home team.

Formartine got the better of SPFL League One team Peterhead, beating them 2-0 in a home game. Conor Gethins and Scott Lisle were the scorers.

The side's first pre-season game saw them beaten 5-2 by Banks O’ Dee at Pitmedden.
