Formartine United suffered a heavy defeat in the first round of the Highland League Cup losing 5-0 to Brechin City.

A brace from Cameron Ross and goals from Kieran Inglis, Marc Scott and Julian Wade saw the Angus side take the victory at North Lodge Park.

It means City progress to the next round, which will be drawn on Thursday at Maggie's Highlands centre in Inverness.

Before the match started at Pitmedden on Saturday, a minute's silence was held to mark Remembrance weekend.

Formartine's Graeme Rodger saw an early chance saved by Brechin goalkeeper Jack Wills and the ball went out for a corner.

United captain Stuart Anderson was then booked for a high footed challenge on Scott and received a yellow card from referee Mike Roncone.

Inglis had a good chance when the ball fell to him in the Formartine box but his effort was just wide.

He was proving to be an early threat and shortly after had another opportunity in the box, however the home defence did enough to ensure he could not get a strong hit on the ball to score.

His persistence paid off when he opened the scoring for City on 23 minutes. Wade laid the ball off to him and he made no mistake with his effort hitting it high into the net.

United were looking to get back into the game and had a penalty shout for a challenge on Kevin Hanratty but it was not given by Roncone.

Cole Anderson saw his shot blocked by the Brechin defence and a free-kick from Anderson in a dangerous area went wide of the goal.

In the closing stages of the half the visitors increased their lead through Ross. A long ball found him, he evaded the defence and shot the ball low past Formartine goalkeeper Ewen Macdonald.

City continued applying the pressure after the break with both Scott and Wade seeing efforts saved by Macdonald.

Brechin got their third goal about 15 minutes into the half after a good move saw the ball reach Scott and he fired it into the net.

Formartine's Tyler Mykyta hit a long shot at goal but Wills was there to thwart him.

City increased their lead soon after when a corner from Michael Paton got to Wade and his header made it 4-0.

United had a free-kick in a good area and Mykyta's strike took a deflection and then an awkward bounce in front of Wills but he managed to save.

Brechin got their fifth goal about 10 minutes before the final whistle. A ball found Ross who shot high into the far corner of the net for his second.

Formartine had a late surge into the visitors' box when Andrew Greig had a good run at goal and looked away to score, however the City defence was on him to block his effort and keep their clean sheet as the game came to a close.
