Scottish Cup controversy as club and fan video footage suggests Aberdeen’s clinching second goal in Scottish Cup win at Elgin City should not have been awarded
Aberdeen were worthy 3-0 Scottish Cup winners over Elgin City on Saturday, but it seems their second goal shouldn’t have been awarded.
Elgin goalkeeper Aidan Glavin pounced on Duk’s headed effort on his goal-line, and was infuriated when the far side assistant flagged that the ball had crossed the line and a goal was given - watch Scottish Cup youtube match highlights below.
Glavin said after the match it wasn’t a goal, and video footage both from behind the goal and from an Aberdeen fan’s perspective back up his claim.
VAR was not operating at the fourth round tie.
Elgin City’s own video isn’t entirely conclusive, showing that it is likely that Glavin had recovered the ball before it squirmed over the line.
The fan video shows that the whole ball could not have crossed the line.
Elgin assistant manager Stefan Laird posted the club video on his X account and suggested it was a “comical” decision by the officials to award the Dons their second goal.
The aftermath of the controversial strike saw Elgin defender Lyall Booth shown a yellow card, and led to his dismissal two minutes later for a foul when he wouldn’t have bene in trouble had the goal not been given.
