JACK Sim's stunner gave Ellon United their first Superleague win this season - but manager Tommy Robertson claims he knew it was only a matter of time.

United hauled themselves off the foot of the table with a dogged 1-0 home win over Montrose Roselea on Saturday, after Sim's second half strike.

A win can do wonders for perspective, and despite taking just a solitary point from their opening 10 games, the Meadows men are now only two points off East End and safety.

Commenting, Robertson said: "I'm delighted with the performance from the players, especially after limited training days over the festive period.

After just having played Montrose in December, I knew we were unlucky that day and was positive that things would be different on Saturday.

"We stuck to the game plan to make it difficult for them to cause us any problems.

"I knew we would create plenty chances.

"We could have put the game to bed in the first half if we had taken the chances we had then.

"But it was a gutsy performance from the boys and they deserved their rewards for the discipline and the work rate they put in.

"Hopefully now we can take some confidence into our next three games in January and get the points on the board and climb up the table."

Ellon travel to seventh-place Hermes this weekend.
