Elgin City surrendered top spot in William Hill league 2 after East Fife score winner in seventh minute of stoppage time

Elgin City were knocked off top spot in League 2 by a 97th minute East Fife winner on Saturday.

It was only the second league defeat of the season for Allan Hale’s side, with a free kick doing the damage right at the death in a 2-1 East Fife success which put the Methil men top.

Lewis Hyde made his first start since September in City’s only change from the team which beat Kelty Hearts in the Scottish Cup, Owen Cairns dropping to the bench.

Elgin started well at a blustery New Bayview but found themselves behind after 14 minutes when Reis Peggie shot low past Kilmarnock loan keeper Aidan Glavin.

City drew level 13 minutes later thanks to a wind-assisted Mark Gallagher effort from long range for his third goal of the campaign.

Dajon Golding should have edged Elgin in front but fired a drive off the post with the home keeper grounded.

Scorer Gallagher then went off injured for the visitors to be replaced by Cairns after 33 minutes.

Dylan Gavin replaced Lewis Girvan just before the hour as manager Hale added to his attacking options.

Kian Leslie came close with an effort over the bar for the Black and Whites.

He was soon replaced by Olly McDonald in Hale’s third substitution of the game.

The away side forced a series of corners in pursuit of a winner, but instead it came at the other end with virtually the last kick of the game.

East Fife were awarded a free kick outside the box in the seventh minute of time added on and Jess Norey poked home what proved to be the winner.

With Peterhead also losing 3-2 at Clyde, East Fife jumped into top spot with their win.
