Drivers overcome rain for Grampian Kart Club action

THE third round of the Scottish Super Series made its way to Boyndie Drome Circuit on Sunday, July 14.

A torrential rain storm on the Wednesday prior - where a month of rain fell in a day - meant the paddock was very wet, but the circuit coped well.

Sunday was damp in the morning and dried up as the day progressed, with drivers even getting a glimpse of sun in the afternoon.

Feature Trophy was the Kenny Mackay Shield for the GKC driver in Micro Max, Honda Cadet, Rotax Inter-Max or Junior Max classes.

Micro Max

Louis Pyper got the best start and led for first three laps from George Simmons.

Simmons took the lead but retired a few laps later.

Hamish Gordon, who was fifth at the end of lap five was driving through the field and by lap nine had taken the lead and took the chequered flag by two seconds.

Pyper held second and Jack Elder took the final podium position.

Senior Max 177 kg

Only two drivers took part in this one, but produced a close contest. Finlay Hutchison led with Stewart McLennan tucked in behind. This was maintained until half distance McLennan slipped through at gate corner. McLennan went onto win by two-tenths from Hutchison.

Honda Cadets 200

2023 Scottish champion, Vinnie Lewis, took a lights-to-flag victory, but it was not easy.

Andrew Sutherland was close behind all the way being a second down crossing the line. Luca Bicocchi moved to third and took the chequered flag.

However, he received a time penalty for nose cone infringement which dropped him to fourth. Therefore, Bailey Wilson took third.

Rotax Intermax

Thomas Jackson, who set a new lap record in the heat three was best away when the red lights went out.

He was followed by Ian Campbell and Lewis Stewart. Jackson opened a gap over Campbell who did similarly to Stewart.

Later, Stewart closed on Campbell and both closed on Jackson. Three laps to go all were together.

A slight touch between Campbell and Stewart going through the loop allowed Jackson to regain a gap.

Stewart gained from Campbell from there touch. Jackson took the victory from Stewart and Campbell.

Senior Max 162kg

At the second time of asking the Senior Max final got underway. Pole-man Tristan Rennie, who was racing the circuit for the first time in seven years, led when the lights went out.

He was followed by David Mitchell, Rhys Baillie, Aaron Mackay, Max Taylor and Gary Bird.

Taylor began his move by taking Mackay on lap two, Baillie lap five and Mitchell on lap 10 to gain second.

He was three second behind Rennie. On the following six laps he reeled in Rennie catching him at the beginning of the last lap.

It came down to the last corner. Rennie defended on the inside and Taylor tried around the outside. But it was not to be landing on the rumble strips. Rennie took the victory by 0.2 seconds from Taylor. Third was Mitchell.

Junior Max

With the largest grid of 20 karts, Hamilton’s Matteo Pallazzo was away at the lights never to be caught - taking the chequered flag by two seconds.

JJ Buchan retired on lap two. Ellis Bell took up the chase in second. Alex Hawcutt moved to third over Owen Wallace on lap three. These two remained close but the places remained unaltered.

Trophies were presented in the clubhouse after the meeting by chairperson Dorothy Wyness. The next meeting will be round 4 of the BDOC on August 10 and 11.
