COLONY Park manager Richard Davidson says Pete Douglas will come back "stronger than ever" after his horrific leg break.

The Inverurie side's clash with Nairn St Ninian on Saturday was abandoned with around 25 minutes remaining - the Highlanders led 4-0 at the time - after Douglas' injury, which scans later showed to be a double fracture.

The long-serving defender was on the receiving end of an unfortunate and innocuous tackle, with the referee deciding to call a halt to proceedings there and then.

And Davidson said: "He has been with the club since its inception and is one of the most popular footballers around the Garioch.

"He has been heartened by the overwhelming good wishes he has received since yesterday afternoon.

"The match was rightly stopped and as he couldn’t be moved it became obvious that it couldn’t be finished before darkness set in and the referee sensibly abandoned the game, in my view.”

Davidson added: "Nairn were 4-0 up at the time but scorelines are an irrelevance when something of this nature happens.

"We all just want to play for the love of the game but players health and wellbeing are way more important than a match result.

"We wish Pete a speedy recovery and as a club and a squad we will be supporting him as best we can in the coming weeks and months."

Nairn had blown Colony during the game, scoring all their goals in the first half due to a combination of spectacular scoring and poor defending.

Colony began to improve, and were looking like perhaps getting back into the game when Douglas competed for a loose ball in midfield.

He got to there first, but his opponent, sliding in, connected with the lower part of his leg with sickening results, and it was immediately realised that he had sustained a serious injury.

Players from both sides were visibly upset and the match was consequently abandoned.
