Buckie Thistle confident ahead of trip to Inverurie Locos
BUCKIE Thistle kick off their Highland League campaign on Saturday at Inverurie.
Graeme Stewart's side have enjoyed a good pre-season build up and head into the season in confident mood.
Their final warm up game saw them beat Cumbernauld Colts 1-0 at Broadwood on Saturday with Scott Adams getting the goal.
The only blip has been a 7-4 defeat at Bridge of Don Thistle which assistant manager Lewis Mackinnon labelled a "freak result".
"Barring the Bridge of Don result it has been brilliant and the boys are looking fit," he added.
"It was a good workout on Saturday against a decent side who would be a top half Highland League team.
"We played on a new 4G pitch at Broadwood and we bossed the game and created a few chances.
"Everyone has come through pre-season pretty much unscathed. It is a dilemma for Spider (manager Graeme Stewart) as he has options in different areas.
"A good performance in training this week by any of the boys could nail a place in the team."
After two seasons of indifferent form affected by a horrendous injury list, the Jags are heading into this season with only John McLeod (hips) and Ceiran McLean (knee) missing. However, McLean is back in training and should be ready to return to action inside the next month or so.
Kevin Fraser, Sam Urquhart and Craig Cowie are three key players who have shown up well in pre-season after their respective injury lay-offs.
Buckie face a tough trip to Harlaw Park on Saturday for the curtain-raiser.
Mackinnon said: "I like going to Harlaw Park and it will be a good marker for us to see where we are at.
"Our aim is to be up there challenging in the top four or five teams because we have good players in our squad."
