BUCKIE Thistle reached the quarter finals of the Highland League Cup after coming from behind to beat Deveronvale in a hotly-contested Fisherman’s Derby last night.

Scott Dunn gave 'Vale the lead on 13 minutes after a short pass-back from Hamish Munro allowed him in to slot past Daniel Bell, but Thistle were level at the break thanks to Steven Ross’ effort on 33 minutes.

Substitute Joe McCabe stepped up to score from inside a crowded penalty area in the last minute to send Buckie into the last eight.

The Jags will host Fraserburgh, who won at Victoria Park earlier this season, in the next round.

Manager Graeme Stewart said his side did enough to get through.

“We probably shaded it the first half and the second was more even,” he said. “We needed a win to get back on track and we got it. We haven’t had too many games and you could see that as they were slightly stronger than us at the end.

“Deveronvale are a really good side – I rate them. They played well. They are dynamic, young and fit and will cause a lot of teams problems.

“But they only scored because of a mistake from us and they raised their game too because it was a derby.”

The Fisherman’s Derby is known to be lively, and that was the case off the pitch as well as on it on Wednesday.

Visiting supporters threw smoke bombs onto the park three times – but Stewart described the incidents on the terraces as “handbags”.

He added: “You don’t like to see it but it was nothing too silly. There was a lot of handbags getting thrown about.

“The fans should have known better – they are adults.

“Fair play to the club because they got proper stewarding in and anything that did happen was quickly stamped out.”

The Jags have the weekend off, due to Inverurie Loco Works’ Scottish Cup tie against Broxburn Athletic, and are back in cup action on Wednesday night when they face Formartine United in the semi-final of the Aberdeenshire Shield.

Within the next week, Jags supporters should be welcoming a new face through the gates at Victoria Park.

After the departure of striker Scott Graham, who left to return to Clachnacuddin, Stewart is hoping to bolster his ranks with a new forward.
