The Gents’ Five Day tournament is the biggest event of the season for the club and preparations are well under way for the event with the winner receiving the coveted blazer.

One man who will be looking to get his hands on it will be David Morrison who has just won the club championship for the third time in a row but has never won the Five Day tournament.

Club captain Albert Milne hopes the event can match the success of last year.

He said: “Last year was great, we brought back the winner’s blue blazer and it created a lot of excitement amongst the players, who all wanted to be the first to be presented with it since it was last won in 1980 by George Banks.

“It was ironic that 2010 was to be George’s last five day at Duff House Royal and we asked him to present it to the winner.

“Calum Malcolm of Dunfermline took it home, as well as the trophy, and now that we have brought it back every year, it has added an extra bit of excitement to an already great tournament.”

The 76th tournament will open on Monday, August 1, and will last till Friday, August 5, and is full, with a waiting list of golfers hoping to be among the 195 taking part.

Preparations are well under way for the tournament, and this year the club has attracted a new sponsor in Belhaven.

The club are also grateful to the many volunteers who assist during the week, as well as at the Ladies’ Five Day and other open tournaments at Duff House Royal.

Milne added: “For me, any success we enjoy through our open tournaments is directly attributable to our volunteers, who are on hand, year on year, to help this tournament run smoothly.

“Without them, the tournament would suffer and not enjoy the reputation it has.

“The course is in great condition this year, with the greens especially playing really well. The course has come a long way from the flooding of 2009 and the quality of playing surfaces have re-established themselves as being some of the best in the North of Scotland.”

The event will be kicked off by a Family Fun Day on Sunday, July 31, which will see all the competitors taking part in a range of fun activities such as closest to the pin, longest drive and a putting competition.

Last year, £300 was raised for the Macmillan Nurses Charity. All members and guests are welcome to attend.
