Grampian Kart Club’s Gold Cup leg produces excitement on dreary day





The second and final round of the Gold Cup has taken place at Boyndie Drome Circuit.

The first round took place during summer at Crail, with the second round taking place on a bleak day near Banff.

After only two heats the fog descended with the visibility restricted between marshal posts. Racing was suspended for about an hour and a half.

A drizzly rain began resulting the fog lifting which allowed racing to resume. Due to the loss of time only two heats and finals took place.

Feature trophy was the September Cup for the most successful driver of the day.

Honda Cadet 160

Front a standing start, Bailey Wilson led from Jack Thomson and Kyle Kerr. Lap two, Thomson took the lead and opened a considerable gap to take the chequered flag. Wilson took second with Kerr third.

Rotax Intermax

From lights out William Alexander led briefly but James Sims took over. Ian Campbell ran wide on the run down to pit corner.

At the end of the first lap the order settled down to Sims, Alexander, Campbell and Sophie Ingram. There was drama at the left-hander when Ian Campbell’s kart parted company with a rear wheel, spun across the grass and retired on the spot.

Alexander closed in on Sims and dived to the inside at Gate corner to lead. Sims chase hard for the final laps but Alexander won by less than half a second. Ingram took third.

Junior Prokarts (Twin engines)

Brodie Hoggan led away from Fraser Cowan, Callum Hoggan, Declan Dixon, Jayden Norris and Daniel McGovern.

The order remained unaltered with the drivers getting spread. Cowan closed on Brodie Hoggan in the last few laps, but he took the victory from Cowan and Callum Hoggan.

Honda Cadets 200/Micro Max

Vinnie Lewis took a lights to flag victory. Jack Thomson followed home in second followed by Bailey Wilson and Luca Bicocchi.

Louis MacDonald was the solitary Micro Max driver challenged Bicocchi but did not get through.

Junior Max

Pole-man Leo Massie got the best start when the lights went out. Massie was never headed and won by five seconds.

Nathanial Gray took up the chase followed by Kyle Smith, Owen Towler and Finlay Smith. Towler and F Smith got past K Smith.

Towler chased after Gray and caught and passes him on Boyndie straight. Massie was to far away for Towler to catch. Towler was second followed by Gray, F Smith and K Smith.

Senior Prokarts (Twin engines)

The slick-tyred prokart drivers had to work hard to keep it on the black stuff.

Adrian Brodie led a train of four karts with Niall Laughland, Bruce Ewen and Craig Smith. This group circulated closely together. Ewen moved to second on lap seven.

Brodie got a few meters on the group but out-braked himself at MTM Bend which allowed Ewen through. Brodie recovered to second. Ewen took the victory, third was Laughland and Smith fourth.

Senior Max 162kg

Aiden McDonald’s first outing in senior proved successful as he took starting lights to flag victory.

A clash at Shirlaw’s between Kristofer Bruce and Stuart Pollock caused Pollock to spin.

Jack Simpson was closed down by Bruce. Bruce took second on lap six. Simpson challenged at pit corner but Bruce held onto second at the finish line with Simpson third.

Trophies were presented in the clubhouse after the meeting by chairperson Dorothy Wyness.

The next Boyndie meeting will take place over the weekend of October 12 and 13.
