Scottish Dolphin Centre in Spey Bay receives DYW Moray Employer Recognition Award
An award has highlighted a dolphin centre’s “exceptional work in supporting young people”.
Marine charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation’s Scottish Dolphin Centre has been awarded DYW Moray’s Employer Recognition of the Month for September 2024.
The award recognises the Spey Bay centre’s exceptional work in supporting young people and local schools through a range of activities.
The centre, which helps raise funds and awareness for the charity’s vital conservation work, has been recognised for providing a welcoming and supportive environment for young people to work and learn.
They offer job opportunities in their on-site café and offer young staff training and guidance.
Sarah Barnes, DYW Programme Manager, presented the certificate and praised the centre’s ongoing efforts.
She said: “The WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre has gone above and beyond in supporting young people in Moray.
“They not only provide jobs but create a space where young people feel supported and valued.
“Since their inception they have been dedicated to engaging young people with their work.
“It is a great example of what we aim to achieve through DYW Moray.
“When visiting the centre, I could really feel how nurturing their set up is – it was admirable.”
The centre is heavily involved in local schools, offering educational visits, workshops and talks to young people.
They have been supporting Lossiemouth High School with their interdisciplinary learning.
Amber Anderson has recently completed a residential placement at the Scottish Dolphin Centre.
She said: “The centre has helped me in my conservation journey through their residential volunteer programme.
“The conservation sector can be challenging to enter, and it is hard to figure out where to start in terms of gaining skills and knowledge.
“The volunteer programme has allowed me to learn and gain experience in many different areas of conservation such as public speaking, engagement, and education.
“These vital skills will be beneficial to myself as I begin to look for employment opportunities in wildlife and conservation.”
