Hazel Thomson was at the cliffs near Gardenstown when she took these photos of gannets.

Gannets hunt fish by diving into the sea from heights of up to 100ft and pursuing their prey underwater.

Striking the water at speeds approaching 60mph allows them to catch fish at a much greater depth than most airborne birds.

Air sacks positioned under the skin of their faces and chests act a bit like bubble wrap, cushioning them from the impact with the water.

Despite their reputation for being greedy, gannets are not really gluttons at all.

It's true they posses healthy appetites, but studies have shown the seabirds never steal each other's food.
