Last week a total of 64 young musicians from Meldrum Academy spent the day rehearsing alongside 45 musicians from Her Majesty’s Band of the Royal Marines Scotland.

Principal Teacher for the Faculty of Performing Arts, Linda Moggach said: "The day started with a talk on what it is like to be a musician in the Royal Marines before the pupils split into rehearsal groups: Concert Band (for wind, brass and percussion) Rock Band (for electric guitar, piano, bass guitar and drum kit) and pipers.

"Throughout the day the pupils rehearsed music in preparation for a full-house concert in the evening.

"In the afternoon S2 pupils were treated to a performance by the Function Band.

"They really enjoyed this and enthusiastically clapped and sang along to many famous songs starting with a Queen number.

"There was much excitement at the evening concert as this the first opportunity our musicians had to perform to a live audience since December 2019.

"Indeed it was the first Meldrum music event for many.

"They rose to the occasion and played brilliantly along side the Marines.

"One of the highlights of the evening were the world famous Corps of Drums who marched in and took their place as the band was playing.

"These drummers were part of the larger Corps of Drums who performed alongside Queen after the Paddington Bear sketch at The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Party at Buckingham Palace.

"Other band members formed part of the orchestra at that event and also the A Gallop Through History at Windsor Castle.

"This event was originally booked for June 2020 but due to Covid-19 was postponed so I was delighted when we were able to reschedule.

"Thank you to Her Majesty’s Band of the Royal Marines Scotland for an amazing experience our pupils will never forget.
