Nominations have opened for the fourth biennial Grampian Volunteer Transport Awards, which recognise the important work of community transport volunteer drivers and escorts.

The awards will highlight the vital role community transport plays in allowing people access to health and social care services in the north-east, and the work done in the response to Covid-19.

Nominations are being sought under three categories: Volunteer Driver of the Year, Volunteer Escort of the Year, and Community Contribution of the Year.

The awards are being supported by a variety of partners involved with the delivery of the Grampian-wide Health and Transport Action Plan.

Health and Transport Action Plan programme manager Andrew Stewart said: “Community transport plugs many of the gaps in Scotland’s transport system, providing more than 3.5 million passenger journeys a year, usually for people who have no other means of getting about.

"Volunteers are at the heart of this effort. For every paid job in community transport there are at least five volunteers.

"I encourage everyone to nominate their volunteer transport heroes.”

Nominations are open until October 16 and prizes will be awarded via an online presentation on October 27.

The winner of each category will receive a high street shopping voucher worth £250, sponsored by Colin Lawson Transport. A special prize for notable mention has been donated by Live Life Aberdeenshire.

Following the presentation of prizes, a recruitment drive for new volunteer transport heroes will begin.

A spokesman for Colin Lawson Transport said: "We are delighted to be able to play a small part in recognising the contribution to society that every single volunteer makes, whether it’s answering a phone call, providing transport or delivering shopping or anything else, especially during these unprecedented times, so, on behalf of those benefitting from your time and efforts, thank you very much.”

Nominations can be made by calling 01467 536111 or emailing travel@thinc-hub.org
