Across the north-east, towns and villages were set to hold traditional celebrations including street parties and concerts on the bank holiday.

Unfortunately all of the fantastic local celebrations have, due to the current restrictions been cancelled.

Undeterred by this situation, member of the Royal British Legion in Oldmedlrum are calling on the community to help them instead create a visual display.

A spokesman for the Legion said: "Here at the Royal British Legion we cannot let such a historic milestone go unmarked.

"We would like to have a visual display outside the legion for everyone to see and admire when they are out for their designated exercise.

"We would like poppies suitable for outside use to pin to a display board outside the legion.

"So we are asking if you our fantastic supportive residents if you could help by making a poppy to put on display.

"A craft project for the kids while they are off school or even a challenge for all our talented crafters.

"We also thought it would be appropriate given our current lifestyle and to celebrate the heroism of our nurses, doctors, carers, shop staff, fireman, ambulance personnel without whom we would be lost at this moment in time if we could have some rainbows or perhaps rainbow poppies to incorporate into the display."

Poppies and rainbows can be dropped off at the Legion building from Monday to Friday between 9am and 11am.
