Public toilets in Ellon had to be temporarily closed after an act of vandalism on Friday saw soap dispensers ripped off the wall and the floor covered in water as they plugged the sinks with toilet roll.

A spokesman for Aberdeenshire Council said: "We are appalled by this act of vandalism and have had to temporarily shut the facility while repairs and sanitisation take place."

The facility in the town is one of the few conveniences still operated by the council which closed down many sites in a previous round of cost cutting.
