Grey squirrels were originally introduced to the UK from the USA during the Victorian era and first escaped into the wild in 1870.

Both bigger and more robust than their red squirrel cousins who are native to these shores, the greys have since transplanted them across most of the UK.

The north of Scotland remains one of last bastions for reds.

A spokesperson for the trust’s Save Scotland’s Red Squirrels project said: “Following two recent suspected grey squirrel sightings in Elgin we are asking people to keep a close eye out and report further sightings.”

The suspected sightings were on December 29 and January 11.
