Turriff's platinum jubilee celebrations will launch with the lighting of a beacon on June 2.

This is a national event, with beacons being lit across the country at the same time to celebrate The Queen.

At 2pm a town crier will proclaim that the Lighting Of The Beacon will be taking place in the Showground that evening.

Members of the community are then invited to join representatives from various community groups in a parade from Crown Street Car Park (assembling 9pm) into the Haughs led by Turriff And District Pipe Band.

Upon reaching the Haughs people will be invited to gather around the outer edge of the show ring to observe the rest of the evening's activity.

At 9.35pm a piper will play the official jubilee song Diu Regnare, followed by a bugler playing Majesty, the official Bugle fanfare, at 9.40pm.

The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm, and the honour of performing Song For The Commonwealth once the beacon is lit has fallen to local singer Kirsti Smith.

This purchasing of the beacon was made possible thanks to a grant from Formartine Partnership.

The jubilee is also being marked in the town on Sunday with a street party in the town centre, for which afternoon tea tickets are on sale now.

Plans are also in motion to plant a special display in the flowerbed in front of the swimming pool for everyone passing to enjoy.
