Fyvie Castle will celebrate anniversary with time travelling weekend

People will have the opportunity to step back in time at a castle’s anniversary event.

Marking 40 years in the National Trust for Scotland’s care, Fyvie Castle, Garden and Estate is set to host 1644 – Travel Back in Time this August - a weekend of history, action and family fun.

People at Fyvie Castle can experience the roar of canons, clash of steel and smoke of the campfires.

On August 17 and 18, ticket holders can experience the roar of canons, clash of steel and smoke of the campfires.

Eighty re-enactors of the award-winning Earl of Loudon’s Regiment of Foote will muster at Fyvie for displays of live canons, combat skills and 17th century camp life.

Local traditional crafts, storytelling, folk music, face painting, owl displays, ranger-led walks and a range of food trucks will keep all ages entertained.

Brimming with centuries of colourful history, 800-year-old Fyvie played host to William the Lion in around 1214 and later counted Robert the Bruce and the young Charles I among its distinguished guests.

The castle grounds, too, echo with history, not least as the location of the Battle of Fyvie in October 1644 marked by this event – a bruising encounter between royalists under the 1st Marquis of Montrose and a Covenanter army commanded by the Marquis of Argyll.

While this battle was one of many across the country, Fyvie was at the centre of this major crossroads in Scottish and UK history.

Visitor services manager at Fyvie Castle for the National Trust for Scotland Katherine Williams said: “We can’t wait to see the looks of excitement and share what promises to be a memorable weekend.

“Fyvie is rich in history, with unique portrait and antiquities collections and beautiful grounds for walks with family and friends.

“As our charity celebrates the 40th anniversary of Fyvie coming into our care, it’s the perfect time to thank all our supporters, members and visitors.

“Your support helps our charity to continue to protect, care for and share Scotland’s special heritage with everyone.”
