SWIMMING lessons and sports coaching are to begin in the next phase of the re-opening of leisure services in Moray.

Swimming lessons will resume from Monday, October 19, with sports coaching for youngsters to resume a week later on October 26.

Leisure staff in Keith are getting prepared for the return of swimming lessons.

While swimming lessons will resume from Monday, there will be a reduction in the amount of learners allowed in the pool at any one time.

National guidance does not permit swimming teachers to teach in the water yet due to social distancing restrictions, meaning classes for beginners will not restart in the first block.

Moray Council’s leisure staff will make contact with previous lesson participants who can be offered a space. Customers are urged not to contact the facility, but to wait for a call from the leisure team.

All previous lesson participants will be offered a place in the lesson programme but, due to reduced capacity and national restrictions, this may not be in the first or second block.

Sports coaching for children and young people will resume from the start of the new school term – on October 26 – at Lossiemouth, Elgin and Forres House Community Centres.

Everyone who signed up for previous sports development activities will receive an email when booking for activities currently open. More information, including timetables, will shortly be available on Moray Council’s website.

Meanwhile, Elgin High School’s fitness room will also reopen on October 19. Like all other council leisure facilities, booking beforehand is essential for Test and Protect purposes and to comply with capacity restrictions.

Bookings will be accepted through the online booking system www.moray.gov.uk/leisure or by contacting Elgin Community Centre on 01343 543736.

Exercise classes in Forres have been relocated to the community centre from their current base at the swimming pool to allow classes to resume, including Body Combat, Kettlebells, Metafit and Abs (core HIIT). Contact Forres House Community Centre on 01309 672838 for more information.

Moray Council’s sport and leisure manager Ken Brown welcomed the return of so many valued customers to the council’s leisure facilities.

He said: "It has been great to see so many familiar faces, and customers are responding really well to the safety measures we have in place.

"We want to reassure residents that they can be confident we are taking all necessary precautions to allow them and their families to exercise safely.

"We are thrilled to now be in a position to offer more leisure services, including sports coaching and swimming lessons – which we know so many people have been waiting patiently for.

"Thanks to all our customers and FitLife? members for continuing to support their local pools, community centres and fitness rooms.”
