Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has welcomed an announcement of Scottish Government support for the newspaper industry after lobbying for additional help.

The MP wrote to Scottish Finance Secretary Kate Forbes urging Scottish Ministers to come up with a plan to protect the sector, which has seen advertising revenues and sales plummet.

The UK Government had previously announced a package of support – setting aside £35million for advertising spend, including £3.5million for Scotland.

Last night, the Scottish Government said it would commit £3million to the sector.

Mr Duguid said: “I wrote to the Finance Secretary to urge Scottish Ministers to follow the UK Government and offer support to our newspaper industry.

“I welcome this belated intervention that will provide some additional financial support to a sector that has suffered a collapse in advertising revenues and print sales.

“I know from my conversations with those in the industry that this intervention, on top of the money already committed by the UK Government, will make a big difference.

“We may not always agree with the way in which the papers present the news, but a free and healthy press is vital to a functioning democracy.”
