Aberdeenshire students benefit from tuition support
A MSP has hailed a flagship policy which has meant more than 5000 students from the north-east have benefited from free tuition.
The figures, from 2023/2024, are the newest on record and demonstrate the support provided to young people by the Scottish Government.
Under Labour, students in England and Wales now pay £9535 a year for tuition fees – which would be a total sum of £38,140 for Scottish students over the four-year period of a Scottish university course.
Aberdeenshire East MSP Gillian Martin said: “I welcome the news that 5205 students from the Aberdeenshire area attended university free of charge in 2023/24.
“Each and every single one of those students will have saved £38,140 compared to their English counterparts by the end of their degree, thanks to this life-changing Scottish Government policy.
“Labour had previously pledged to follow the SNP’s lead and scrap tuition fees in England – but have instead hiked fees for students to nearly £10,000 a year.
“Under the Scottish Government, we have record numbers of Scottish students securing places at our universities, and recent figures showed a rise in students from our most disadvantaged communities.”
