Steve Clarke’s Scotland side will today be looking to make the most of their first visit to a major tournament since 1998. Ahead of the encounter BetVictor has pulled the key stats as part of its data-driven Euro 2020 Vision Campaign and it appears Scotland has a squad of players who have demonstrated significant potential individually throughout their domestic campaigns.
Defensive solidity at the back; Robertson, Tierney, and Cooper have had great seasons for their clubs in defense.
Midfielders McTominay, Armstrong, and McGinn have shown creativity, as well as defensive discipline that will offer Scotland a true base to build off against the Czech Republic.
Robertson’s output from left back should offer up plenty of service for Che Adams and Ryan Fraser, whose pace should give Scotland a viable outlet on the counterattack.
Robertson’s creative numbers are among the best in Europe, his ability to move the ball up the pitch at 7.16 progressive passes per 90 for Liverpool puts him in the top 1% of fullbacks at the tournament, as well as being in the top 10% for shot-creating actions (2.85 per 90) and assists per 90 (0.22).
Those expecting to see Scotland busy in defense will note that they have one of the Premier League’s best performers at CB. Liam Cooper ranks in the top 1% of all CBs across Europe for Tackles (3.13 per 90), and then backs it up with incredible stats for interceptions (2.18 per 90) and aerials won (4.24 per 90). Not to mention his ability to progress the ball forward from defense with 2.76 progressive passes per 90.
Another important cog in Steve Clarke’s machine is Southampton’s Stuart Armstrong, despite playing in a side who were in freefall come the end of the season, Armstrong continued to put out impressive performances. Armstrong’s 0.22 assists and 0.16 non-penalty goals per 90 meant that he was incredibly productive from midfield and should offer up plenty of service to club teammate Che Adams.
From the Czechs, their standout performer this season has been Tomáš Souček, the all-action combative midfielder has had an impressive scoring streak for the Hammers this season. Souček’s 0.28 non-penalty goals per 90 puts him in the top 2% of midfielders at the tournament, while his ability to break up play (3.58 clearances per 90) and dominate the ball in the air (5.9 aerials won per 90), mean that his a menace at both ends of the pitch.
