Keith A96 Union Bridge repairs welcomed by MP Seamus Logan

The start of repair work to end months of misery for motorists has been welcomed by a local MP.

March 2 saw road agency Amey begin £500,000 repairs following an embankment failure at Union Bridge in Keith last July when a river bank and retaining wall fell into the River Isla.

The result has been months of hell for not only traffic trying to pass through the area, but also local businesses.

The work will reconstruct the damaged wingwall and reinstate the bridge’s load carrying capacity.

News that an end is finally in sight was welcomed by Aberdeenshire North and Moray East MP Seamus Logan.

He said: “Businesses and residents in Keith and the surrounding area will be much relieved that work has commenced on repairing the Union Bridge after it was severely damaged in the heavy rain last summer.

“The closure of this bridge has caused traffic delays and frustration after the river bank collapsed affecting the retaining wall.

“I understand that this repair will cause further upheaval for the local community, but Amey have been keen to provide assurance that any disruption will be managed with the use of temporary traffic lights and signed diversion routes in place, with efforts to keep noise disturbance to an absolute minimum as much as possible.”

Temporary traffic lights will be in place on Union Bridge to allow repair work to be safely carried out. There may be occasions where further short-duration closures of the road are required and further information will be issued should this occur.

Work is scheduled to be completed by May 18.

The works are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if conditions are not favourable.
