However, after a retest, it has been confirmed this afternoon that the test provided a false positive – and the child does not have the virus.

All pupils will return to school tomorrow.

Moray Council said they understand the situation has caused "anxiety and concern".

A spokesperson said: “Following a retest, NHS Grampian's Health Protection Team (HPT) has advised us the individual concerned does not have Covid-19.

“The child’s family has been advised by Test and Protect and therefore there is no reason for them to be isolating.

“The HPT has advised there is no continuing need for primary one children to self-isolate and they may return to school tomorrow.

“We appreciate that this situation has caused anxiety and concern and hope this news will reassure parents and carers that children have not been in contact with a case of Covid-19 within the school.

“The Head of Education and the HPT have praised the schools ongoing Covid-19 risk control measures and we are committed to keeping children as safe as possible whilst at school.”
