The appointment follows an Age Scotland and Scottish Older People’s Assembly (SOPA) campaign to secure the appointment of a councillor as an Older People’s Champion in each of Scotland’s 32 local authorities.

Moray has joined 19 other local authorities who have already appointed their champion.

Age Scotland originally contacted Cllr Warren (Buckie, SNP) with the suggestion and she put forward a motion in council before being chosen for the role herself.

She said: "It's quite an honour to be appointed to this role.

"I'm really looking forward to helping make sure older people's voices are heard.

"Especially in the recovery from Covid – I was struck during the pandemic by the amount of older people who were phoning up asking for help.

"I'm excited to get going and get to work on so many issues."

Cllr Warren will take on the role alongside her current duties.

She added: "I have a very personal connection with this role, with my mother, mother in law and father in law having all had dementia.

"I’m determined to ensure older people's perspectives are understood when the council is developing policy and campaigns.

“I am grateful to my council colleagues for this opportunity and for agreeing to implement this role.”
