A unique planning application for what the developer is stating is the first commercial facility of its kind in Scotland has been approved by Aberdeenshire Council.

Prosect Ltd have applied for plans to convert existing stable buildings at property at Nether Hythie Farmhouse near Mintlaw to house an insect farm to produce high- protein products for human consumption.

In a document submitted with the plans, the company said: “A first in Scotland, this project is paving the way for producing protein in a more sustainable manner than those of large intensive livestock units.

“Insects (crickets) are reared in large plastic containers for bio-security for around 35 days before being harvested by freezing.

“Cricket powder is produced by dehydrating the processed crickets and grinding and milling to form a powder.

“For comparison you can produce one kg of protein from insects in 30 days as opposed to one kg of beef protein in 12-15 months and approximately 75-100kg of protein will be produced every month.”

“Only one other company in the UK is doing this."
