Bracoden Primary School celebrates 150th anniversary

A school celebrated its 150th anniversary with a vibrant community event.

The Bracoden Primary School celebration was officially opened by the Lord-Lieutenant of Banffshire Andrew Simpson, who read a letter from Buckingham Palace on behalf of His Majesty the King.

MP Seamus Logan recognised the occasion by lodging a motion in the House of Commons, commending the school’s efforts.

He particularly praised the creative display in which pupils imagined Bracoden School in the year 2075 - complete with futuristic elements and open-air classrooms.

Addressing the crowd, MSP Karen Adam spoke warmly about Bracoden’s central role in the Gardenstown community and highlighted the impressive standard of work on display.

Head teacher Lorraine Butler said: “The event drew a large crowd from near and far, a testament to the strong support for the school.

“Inside the assembly hall, visitors could view an extensive exhibition of pupils’ work alongside historic artefacts dating back as far as 1872.

“Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, Bracoden Brass - under the guidance of brass tutor Carole Sneddon - performed two songs: Happy Birthday and Now the Day is Over, showcasing the pupils' growing musical talents.

“A special collaborative project saw retired teachers and community members join pupils in creating a wall hanging using wet and needle felting techniques. Every pupil took part in this beautiful artwork, now displayed in the assembly hall as a lasting memento of the day.

“Pat Matheson generously donated a stunning celebratory cake, while Linda Gorn MBE from the Keith Kilt and Textile Centre presented the ‘Hairt o’ Gamrie’ tartan.

“Designed by the pupils, the tartan’s colours reflect the local coastal landscape and its name honours the school's place at the heart of the village.

“The ‘Health Haven’ also showcased a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers grown from seed by the pupils, available for purchase on the day.

“A commemorative book chronicling the school’s history and achievements was also released, created by local historians and school supporters. Priced at £10, it’s available from the school and makes a thoughtful gift.”

Mr Logan said: “I was delighted to be able to attend this very special event in the history of Bracoden School marking the tremendous milestone that is 150 years since the school was founded.

“The pupils put on an excellent performance and the school was, once again, well-supported by the local community.

“I was pleased to be able to mark the event with a congratulatory motion in the House of Commons and I wish headteacher Lorraine Butler and her team continued success going forward.”

The feedback from the day has been very positive.

One visitor said: “Bracoden, you did an incredible job. The thought and detail in every part of the celebration were phenomenal.

“It was an emotional journey viewing the artefacts through the generations - a mix of laughter, memories and heartfelt stories.

“It was especially moving to reconnect with former pupils and staff who returned to mark this milestone.

“Thank you for creating such a memorable event. I’m grateful my children are making the same cherished memories I did during my time at Bracoden.

“They love their school, their teachers and their friendships. We are proud to be part of Bracoden — past, present, and future.
