Netflix has also confirmed that the new series will not be the show's last as previously thought.

Scenes for The Crown were shot both at Covesea Lighthouse and Macduff Harbour over the summer.

The actress Imelda Staunton was sighted at both locations as she took over the the role of the Queen from fellow Oscar winner Olivia Coleman.

Season five is expected to focus on the breakdown of Princess Diana's marriage to Prince Charles and her subsequent death.

Scottish actor Jonny Lee Miller is set to play Prime Minister John Major, while Prince Philip will be portrayed by Jonathan Pryce.

Written by Peter Morgan, The Crown has been widely hailed as one of the best TV shows of the past decade.

Amongst the 123 awards it has won so far worldwide are seven Golden Globes and 10 Emmys.
