RSABI, the charity supporting people in Scottish agriculture, has appointed Shona Milne as its new full-time case officer in the north-east.

Shona will be responsible for delivering RSABI’s package of emotional, practical and financial support to new and existing clients in the north- east, as well as raising awareness of RSABI’s services.

Having grown up in rural Aberdeenshire, spending her early years living on farms where her dad worked before he made the move into haulage, she completed a degree in Law followed by a Post Graduate Diploma at the University of Aberdeen.

Shona’s career has included working for grain companies, working as a Welfare Rights Officer with the Local Authority, 18 years managing Aberdeenshire Care & Repair Service and latterly five years with the Department of Work and Pensions.

During this time, she was also involved in the family haulage business, including the role of Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor.

Outside of work, Shona volunteers with a local Community Park.

Shona said: “I have spent much of my working life providing support and advice to individuals in their time of need, and I am passionate about everyone having access to the assistance that is available for them to improve their situation.

“I am delighted to have started work with RSABI, a respected organisation that I dealt with previously in my role with Care & Repair.

"I look forward to continuing the great work of RSABI and helping to raise awareness of the services offered.”

Chris McVey, RSABI’s welfare manager, said: “We’re really pleased to have Shona on board as a full-time case officer .

"She brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the role.

“Recent months have been difficult for many people in agriculture, with labour shortages, supply chain issues and the increase in input costs just some of the factors affecting farmers and crofters.

We’d urge anyone feeling stressed or low to give us a call. Myself, Shona and the whole team are here to listen and provide support.”

Nina Clancy, RSABI chief executive, said: “Shona takes over from Richard Huxtable, who sadly passed away in 2020.

"He was a well-known RSABI case officer and hugely respected in the industry.

"He is still very much missed by us all.”

RSABI provides emotional, practical and financial support to people in Scottish agriculture.

Since April this year, they have provided supported to over 500 people involved in the Scottish agricultural industry.

RSABI has a helpline supported by RHASS which is open 365 days a year from 7am to 11pm - 0300 111 4166
