Royal Naval Air Service Longside walk set up by Ranger Service

Aberdeenshire Council Ranger Service will be taking a walk around the remains of Longside’s First World War airship base at Lenabo On Sunday March 26 from 11am - 1.30pm.

Though overgrown with conifers, the foundations for the three mooring sheds (323-711ft. long) can still be made out.

This site was a huge undertaking with administrative, domestic and engineering facilities all close by.

Quite why this 950-acre area was chosen is a mystery.

Cleared by thousands of labourers aided by steam scoops and bucket cranes, of its thousands of tons of wet peat, it took just under a year to have the base ready for action.

This is a little-known story that deserves to be heard again.
