Reuse charity donation containers at household recycling centres in Ellon and Peterhead have reopened.

The facilities are once again accepting donations which will be collected, prepared and sold on by north-east charity Stella’s Voice.

All donated items are sold to generate much-needed funds for its humanitarian efforts both home and abroad.

It accepts a range of donations from the public – whether it be furniture, clothing, toys or bric-a-brac.

At the outbreak of the Covid pandemic, the containers were closed on safety grounds, however the charity is now once again collecting donated items which will be quarantined for 72 hours at its storage centre before being sold.

Residents wishing to make donations at either of the centres are reminded they will still be required to make a booking online at www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/waste/recycling/book-recycling-centre-visit

Stella’s Voice director Mark Morgan said: “In our experience, many people who are having a household clear out will only ever make one trip and that is to a household recycling centre.

“Covid has had a huge impact on the charity this year and we are absolutely thrilled to have the reuse containers back in operation.

"The donations we receive through the centres at Peterhead and Ellon are hugely appreciated and I would encourage all residents to support us with their unwanted but very serviceable items – you will be making a real difference to the people we support.”

Items Stella’s Voice can collect from reuse containers include: clothing and shoes – regardless of condition; bikes and toys; household goods and bric-a-brac; furniture with anything material having fire tags attached; exercise equipment; DIY and garden tools; and bedding, curtains and other household linen or fabrics.

Aberdeenshire Council waste manager Ros Baxter said: “I am delighted we have now been able to reopen our reuse containers at Peterhead and Ellon where residents can give good, usable items a new lease of life and support a tremendous local charity.

“It is also really important to stress that many charities such as Stella’s Voice can uplift goods for free if the item is in decent condition and working order which is tremendous for the environment and for these great causes.”

Meanwhile, XS Resources, Stella’s Voice and Aberdeenshire Council have also launched Connect Up For Aberdeenshire: Give your technology and small appliances a second life.

The scheme is part of the UK-wide Recycle Your Electricals campaign encouraging and supporting more people to reuse and recycle their old items.

Items being accepted at the Stella’s Voice Barn at Inverugie, Peterhead, include smartphones, smart watches and charging cables; kettles, toasters, blenders and other kitchen appliances; electric shavers and hair dryers; computers, laptops, tablets and games consoles; TVs, speakers and remote controls.

Only electricals which have a CE kitemark and which are under 10 years old can be taken, but electricals of any type whether working or not cannot be accepted at the reuse facilities.

The Stonehaven donation point in the community centre at Robert Street car park is open Mondays from 2-4pm and Thursdays from 6-8pm.
