Reminder over potentially dangerous waste after quick thinking collection crew in Fraserburgh avert a serious vehicle fire

Aberdeenshire Council's waste teams are reminding residents to think about what they put into the household waste bins after an incident in Fraserburgh.

A spokesman explained: "We have to say a massive thank-you to our quick-thinking waste collection crew and the equally-rapid response from local firefighters after smoke started billowing from the back of one of our vehicles in Fraserburgh yesterday.

"Our team managed to raise the alarm and get the vehicle to a quiet area of an industrial estate where 6 tonnes of waste material was dropped for the fire crew to safely dampen down.

"It’s believed a piece of smouldering wood was the cause of the smoke – fortunately it did not ignite as the consequences could have been far more serious.

"So can we please remind you all to ensure that only appropriate items are placed in your household waste bins and that any hot or smouldering materials are fully cooled and extinguished before they are binned."
