Cullen library future to take centre stage at public meeting

Controversial plans to close Cullen library are set to take centre stage at a public meeting this Friday evening.

Moray Council are proposing the closure of a swathe of libraries across the region as part of cost cutting measures in the 2024/25 budget.

If passed, it would leave just four - Buckie, Elgin, Forres and Aberlour - serving the whole of Moray, representing one library per 20,000 people, the worst ratio in the UK.

Cullen library would be replaced with an outreach service comprising two hours a week for lending/borrowing of books and other services.

One of those set to attend Friday’s meeting is local MSP Karen Adam.

She said: “Cullen library is more than just books, it also provides access to digital services, a valuable service to low income families and those without internet access at home.

“It is also home to groups such as the Adult Reading Group and Lego Lates, a play club for children.

“In 2023 the library won an award for the number of children who completed the Summer Reading Challenge.

“Cullen cannot afford to lose this community resource.”

Cullen and Deskford Community Council is supporting the campaigning groups Friends of Cullen Library and save Moray Libraries in a bid to have the closure plans shelved.

The meeting is due to get under way at 7pm in Cullen Community Centre.
