Plans to extend the boat compound at Banff harbour have been backed by Aberdeenshire Council.

The development will allow for the creation of more dry berths and a new repair area.

The port, which is a grade A listed structure, is run by the local authority and it submitted the planning permission.

The work will see the compound extended into part of the nearby public car park and will also involve moving a concrete sculpture.

In a document submitted as part of the planning application it said: “The extended compound will include part of the public car park as well as a section of the SGN owned gas works, both of which sit adjacent to the existing compound.

“A new gated entrance will also be created to provide access from the car park while the existing gated entrance on Telford View will be moved to improve access for vehicles from the slipway in the outer basin."

The council's planning service had no issue with the proposed work.

In its decision it said: "The planning authority considers that the application is for a development that is in accordance with the Aberdeenshire Local Development Plan 2017 as it would not undermine the setting of the category A-listed harbour, and there would be no negative impact on the character and appearance of the Banff Conservation Area.

"The proposal would not lead to pollution or hazard to the surrounding area, and the adjacent pedestrian path and the national cycle network route would be unaffected."

The plans tie in with a wider drive to enhance the facilities and equipment at Banff harbour.

This has included the construction of a new slipway in the outer basin and the harbour is also looking to purchase a boat hoist.
