St Peter’s kids lend Buckie Community Hub a helping hand with generous food donation

Kids at a primary school have been praised for their support of people in need.

P4/5 youngsters at St Peter’s Primary School in Buckie proudly handed over a sizeable donation of food for Buckie Community Hub’s food larder during their recent Harvest Assembly.

The donation consisted primarily of dried food products for distribution to those in need of a helping hand putting food on the table.

Praising their efforts at the assembly, Acting Headteacher Lesley Maclennan said: “A big thank you to those of view who donated food for the Buckie Community Hub.

“I could hardly believe how much there was from such a small number of families.

“St Peter’s is definitely the most generous of all the schools I have worked at.”

At the assembly to collect the food donations was Buckie Area Forum (BAF) chairman Gordon McDonald and wife Linda. The hub was created by BAF and is run by a team of volunteers.

Speaking after the assembly, Mr McDonald said: “We’re really grateful for this generous donation from St Peter’s, it will make a real difference to many people.

“It’s great top see the kids getting so involved with this along with their parents and teachers.

“The larder is very busy and is well used, and it will no doubt be getting even busier as winter comes in and we head towards Christmas.

“The food through this and other donations will be distributed in the form of food parcels.”

Since opening its doors around three years ago the hub, which is situated at 17, East Church Street in Buckie, has been helping mitigate some of the worst effects of the cost of living crisis.

In addition to providing food parcels, the hub’s volunteers can signpost people to agencies which may be able to help resolve a variety of problems and issues. They also distribute a range of items, such as blankets, free of charge to those in need.

People are also welcome to drop in for a cuppa and a chat, and in the colder weather the hub acts as a warm bank.
