Politics: Preparation is key when dealing with worst of winter disruption
As we approach another winter in the north-east, it's important to acknowledge the challenges that come with the colder months, writes Banffshire and Buchan Coast MSP Karen Adam.
Harsh winters are nothing new for us, but recent storms have caused significant disruption across Banffshire and Buchan Coast, leaving many without power and some struggling to get through the aftermath.
While we can't control the weather, we can certainly control how we respond, and I want you to know that I am here to help.
This winter, we’re not just battling storms — we’re also facing the ongoing cost of living crisis.
The rising cost of essentials like food, energy, and housing has made life difficult for many families, and this will likely get worse as temperatures drop.
For those on fixed incomes, particularly our elderly residents and those on disability benefits, it can be overwhelming to manage household expenses when heating costs surge.
One area of concern is the low uptake of pension credit. Too many older people are missing out on this vital benefit, which could make a real difference in coping with rising energy bills and day-to-day living costs.
If you’re over State Pension age or have family members who are, please reach out to my office so we can help ensure you’re receiving everything you’re entitled to.
Pension credit not only tops up weekly income, but it also opens the door to additional benefits, like help with heating costs and council tax reductions.
You’ve worked hard your whole life — let’s make sure you’re supported properly.
My office is here to support you through the coming months. Whether it’s helping you access energy support schemes, signposting to local food banks, or connecting you with charities that offer practical winter assistance, we’re ready to help.
I know many of us feel the pinch this winter, and no one should be struggling alone. We also have resources for insulation, energy efficiency advice, and ways to keep your home warmer for less.
Winter resilience isn’t just about what we can do as individuals, but how we come together as a community.
I’m asking everyone to keep an eye on those who might be particularly vulnerable.
Whether it’s an elderly neighbour, a single parent, or someone with disabilities, a quick check-in or lending a hand can make all the difference.
To make sure everyone has the information and support they need, I will be hosting a series of Winter Resilience drop-in events across the constituency.
These events are designed to provide practical advice on how to prepare for the colder months ahead, along with an opportunity to meet with me and my team to discuss any personal concerns you might have.
Time and venues are to be confirmed so please get in touch with me for more information or check on my social media pages.
You can contact my office for more details by calling 01779 400601 or emailing karen.adam.msp@parliament.scot
I’ll be holding the drop-in events on the following dates:
• Peterhead: November, 1
• Buckie: November 8
• Macduff: November 15
• Fraserburgh: November 22
At these events, we’ll be giving a presentation on winter resilience, including tips on managing energy use, emergency planning, and how to stay connected during periods of isolation.
After the presentation, there will be time for one-to-one meetings, so please feel free to come along and speak to me directly about any concerns you may have.
If you need help with benefits, housing, or other pressing issues, we’ll do everything we can to provide the right support.
I strongly encourage you to attend and share this information with anyone who might benefit from it.
I believe in the strength of our community and the resilience we’ve shown in the past.
This winter let’s double down on that by looking out for each other and sharing resources and support where it’s needed most.
Thank you, and I hope to see you at one of the upcoming events.
