A proposal to construct a new hut for army cadets in Banff has been approved by Aberdeenshire Council.

The plans were submitted to the local authority by the Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association.

The group applied to demolish the existing cadet hut at Academy Drive near Banff Primary School, and build a new one of similar design at the site.

The existing army cadet hut at Banff will be demolished and a new one built on the site.

The new hut will feature a drill hall, two classrooms, an office, kitchen, store and toilets.

The council's planning service approved the application under delegated powers.

A spokesman said: "The proposal complies with relevant policies as contained within the Aberdeenshire Local Development Plan 2017, as the principle and design of the development are acceptable, it would be in keeping with the character of the surrounding area, and would have no adverse impact on the amenity of the neighbouring residents."

Councillor Glen Reynolds said: "I am always pleased to see the modernisation of property that can be brought back into better use and made more attractive and functional, not least a facility that will help the bairns to develop their discipline, personality and character, including the forging of relationships within their peer group.

"Not long after Armed Forces Day 2020, I wish the Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association well in their proposals to pull down their existing hut in Banff and create a new building.

"This was dealt with under delegated powers and did not come before the area committee, but the proposal appeared to be uncontroversial and included a pitched roofed replacement hut with a wider but shorter footprint compared to that of the existing hut.

"The height of the new hut will be slightly reduced and its design appears to be well proportioned and will blend better with the backdrop of the neighbouring properties and existing mature trees compared to the existing one."
